A late-peaking, property-based profile

Spanish net wealth climbs from €37,500 for under-35s to a late peak of €200,800 for 65–74s, and stays high at €163,700 even past 75 — older Spaniards hold more than the mid-career cohort, reflecting property bought decades ago and held for life. The under-35 figure is the low point: younger households, facing a tougher job market, enter the housing ladder later. And because so much wealth is a home that most families own, it is widely held — the mean (€177,800) sits just 1.4× the median, close to Italy and far tighter than the Franco-German pattern. Spain and Italy together form the southern-European "homeowner" profile: higher, more even wealth anchored in property.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average net worth by age in Spain?
Median household net wealth by age of the reference person (ECB HFCS 2021): 16–34 €37,500; 35–44 €82,700; 45–54 €116,700; 55–64 €180,500; 65–74 €200,800; 75+ €163,700. Wealth peaks late — in the 65–74 band — and stays high into later retirement.
What is the median net worth in Spain?
The overall median Spanish household net wealth is €127,700 (ECB HFCS 2021) — above the euro-area median of €123,500. The mean is €177,800, only about 1.4× the median, which is comparatively close.
Why is Spanish wealth so evenly spread?
Spain has one of the highest homeownership rates in Europe, and a primary residence is the largest wealth-building asset for most households. Because so many families own — often outright, with lower mortgage debt than northern Europe — the typical household sits closer to the average. The mean is just 1.4× the median, similar to Italy and far tighter than France (over 2×) or Germany (over 3×). Spanish wealth is property-based and widely held.
Median or mean — which should I use?
The median (€127,700) is the better benchmark for a "typical" Spanish household; half hold less. The mean (€177,800) is only modestly higher because Spanish wealth is comparatively evenly distributed — unlike most countries, where the mean runs far above the median.
