Why Italy's wealth is high — and evenly spread

Net wealth is hump-shaped over the life cycle — it climbs from €95,600 for under-35s to a peak of €212,000 for 55–64s, then eases in retirement. But two things make Italy stand out. First, one of the highest homeownership rates in the euro area lifts the median well above its neighbours, because a home is the largest wealth-building asset for most households. Second, wealth is passed within families and mortgage debt is low, so the typical household sits close to the average: the mean (€208,000) is only about 1.3× the median — versus more than 2× in France and over 3× in Germany. Italian wealth is not just higher, it is more evenly held.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average net worth by age in Italy?
Median household net wealth by age of the reference person (ECB HFCS 2021): 16–34 €95,600; 35–44 €112,600; 45–54 €180,000; 55–64 €212,000; 65–74 €168,000; 75+ €125,400. Net wealth peaks in the 55–64 band, and even the youngest households start high by euro-area standards.
What is the median net worth in Italy?
The overall median Italian household net wealth is €159,000 (ECB HFCS 2021) — the highest of the large euro-area economies, well above the euro-area median of €123,500. The mean is €208,000, only about 1.3× the median, which is unusually close.
Why is Italy's median net worth so high — and so evenly spread?
Two things drive it. Italy has one of the highest homeownership rates in the euro area, and a primary residence is the biggest wealth-building asset for most households, which lifts the median. And wealth is passed within families and mortgage debt is comparatively low, so the gap between the typical household and the average is smaller than in most countries — the mean sits just 1.3× the median, versus over 2× in France and over 3× in Germany.
Median or mean — which should I use?
The median (€159,000) is the better benchmark for a "typical" Italian household; half hold less. The mean (€208,000) is only modestly higher because Italian wealth is comparatively evenly distributed. In most countries the mean runs far above the median — Italy is a notable exception.
