Quick answer: The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) for 2025-26 pays up to $7,787/year per child under 6 and $6,570/year per child aged 6-17. Benefits are tax-free and phase out once Adjusted Family Net Income exceeds $36,502 β reducing by 13.5% per dollar (for 1 child) between $36,502 and $79,087, then by a further 5.7% above $79,087. A family with one child under 6 earning $75,000 AFNI receives approximately $5,149/year ($429/month). CCB reaches zero for a 1-child family at roughly $115,000 AFNI. RRSP contributions reduce AFNI and directly increase CCB entitlement.

Every $10,000 in RRSP contributions that reduces your AFNI increases your CCB by approximately $1,350 on top of your regular income tax refund. File your 2024 return and claim RRSP deductions to maximize your July 2025 CCB entitlement.

The Canada Child Benefit is one of Canada's largest federal transfer programs β over $27 billion distributed annually to roughly 3.5 million families. It replaced the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB) in July 2016 and is fully tax-free.
- Benefit Year β CCB runs JulyβJune, based on your prior-year net income. The 2025-26 benefit year (July 2025βJune 2026) uses your 2024 family net income. File your taxes on time to avoid delays.
- AFNI β Adjusted Family Net Income = your net income (Line 23600) plus your spouse/partner's net income (if applicable), minus any net Universal Child Care Benefit and net registered disability savings plan income repaid.
- Two Phase-Out Stages β The reduction accelerates above $79,087. A family earning $50,000 loses far less per dollar than one earning $100,000. Higher-income families with many children have higher phase-out thresholds due to their larger base benefit.
- RRSP Interaction β Every RRSP dollar that reduces your AFNI below a phase-out zone saves both income tax AND generates additional CCB. This double benefit makes RRSP contributions exceptionally valuable for families with children.
The CDB (Child Disability Benefit) stacks on top for children with approved Disability Tax Credits β an additional $3,322/year per eligible child in 2025-26, with a separate phase-out starting at $79,087 AFNI.

How to use this calculator
- Select the number of children under age 6 and aged 6-17 in your family.
- Enter your Adjusted Family Net Income (AFNI) β this is your family's combined net income from Line 23600 of your 2024 T1 return. For married or common-law couples, add both partners' net incomes.
- Review your maximum benefit (before phase-out), the reduction amount, and your final annual and monthly CCB entitlement.
- Note the income threshold at which your CCB reaches zero β useful for RRSP contribution planning to maximize total benefit.
- If your child qualifies for the Disability Tax Credit, add the Child Disability Benefit (CDB) manually: $3,322/year per eligible child, phasing out above $79,087 AFNI at 3.2%/child.
β Frequently Asked Questions
How is the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) calculated in 2025?
The CCB is calculated based on your Adjusted Family Net Income (AFNI) from the prior tax year and the number and ages of your children. For 2025-26 (July 2025βJune 2026): maximum benefit is $7,787/year per child under 6 and $6,570/year per child aged 6-17. If AFNI exceeds $36,502, the benefit is reduced by: 13.5% of income between $36,502β$79,087 (1 child), plus 5.7% of income above $79,087 β with higher phase-out rates for more children. The CCB is paid monthly, tax-free. Source: CRA T4114, July 2025.
How much is the CCB per child in 2025-26?
The maximum CCB for 2025-26 (July 2025 β June 2026) is $7,787 per year ($648.92/month) for each child under 6, and $6,570 per year ($547.50/month) for each child aged 6-17. These are the maximum amounts before any income-based phase-out. A family earning under $36,502 (Adjusted Family Net Income) receives the full amount. Benefits are indexed to inflation annually. The Child Disability Benefit (CDB) adds up to $3,322/year per eligible child on top of the base CCB.
What income level does the CCB phase out at?
The CCB begins to phase out when Adjusted Family Net Income (AFNI) exceeds $36,502 (2025-26). For a family with one child under 6 receiving the maximum $7,787/year benefit, the CCB reaches zero at approximately $115,000 AFNI. For two children (one under 6, one 6-17) with maximum benefit of $14,357/year, CCB reaches zero at approximately $122,000 AFNI. Families with more children have higher benefits and higher phase-out income thresholds. Use the calculator above to find your exact zero-benefit threshold.
Is the Canada Child Benefit taxable income?
No β the CCB is completely tax-free. You do not include CCB payments on your tax return, and they do not affect your marginal tax rate or other income-tested benefits. However, the CCB is based on your previous year's family net income, so it is income-tested β higher income means lower CCB. One important planning point: RRSP or RRIF deductions that reduce your net income also increase your CCB entitlement. A $10,000 RRSP contribution that reduces AFNI from $50,000 to $40,000 with one child saves approximately $1,350 in CCB reduction (13.5% Γ $10,000) in addition to the income tax savings.
When are CCB payments deposited in 2025?
The CRA deposits CCB on the 20th of each month (or the last business day before if the 20th falls on a weekend or holiday). 2025 payment dates: January 20, February 20, March 20, April 17, May 20, June 20, July 18, August 20, September 19, October 20, November 20, December 12. The 2025-26 benefit year starts July 2025, based on your 2024 tax return. Filing your 2024 taxes on time (by April 30, 2025) ensures your July 2025 payment is correct and on time.
What is the Child Disability Benefit (CDB)?
The Child Disability Benefit (CDB) is an additional tax-free benefit paid as part of the CCB for children eligible for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC). For 2025-26, the maximum CDB is $3,322 per year per eligible child ($276.83/month). Like the CCB, the CDB phases out at higher incomes β the phase-out begins at $79,087 AFNI, at the rate of 3.2% for one eligible child. To receive the CDB, you must first apply for and be approved for the DTC (Form T2201, certified by a medical practitioner) and apply for the CCB (Form RC66).
Does the CCB count if I share custody of my children?
Yes β for shared custody arrangements (where the child lives with each parent at least 40% of the time), each parent can receive 50% of the CCB they would otherwise be entitled to, based on their own family net income. Each parent files their own CCB application (RC66) and the CRA calculates each parent's entitlement separately at 50%. This means a higher-income parent and lower-income parent in a shared custody arrangement will receive different monthly CCB amounts for the same child, because each parent's benefit is based on their own AFNI.
How does the CCB interact with RRSP contributions?
RRSP contributions reduce your net income on line 23200 of your T1 return, which directly reduces your Adjusted Family Net Income (AFNI) for CCB purposes. This creates a 'CCB dividend' on top of the regular tax refund from RRSP contributions. Example: family AFNI $55,000, one child under 6, 33% marginal tax rate. A $10,000 RRSP contribution: saves $3,300 in income tax AND increases CCB by $1,350 (13.5% Γ $10,000). Total financial benefit: $4,650 from a $10,000 RRSP contribution β a 46.5% effective return before investment growth.
