Quick answer: Under the Social Security Administration's 2023 period life table (used in the 2026 Trustees Report), US life expectancy at birth is 75.8 years for men and 81.1 for women. Someone who has already reached 65 can expect more: a 65-year-old man lives on average to 83.1 and a 65-year-old woman to 85.7.
Averages hide a wide spread: a 65-year-old woman has a 35% chance of reaching 90, a man 24%. For retirement planning, a common rule is to plan to the age you have only a 1-in-4 chance of outliving: 89 for a 65-year-old man, 92 for a woman.
What is the life expectancy of a 65-year-old in the US?
Age 83.1 for a man and 85.7 for a woman, on average (SSA 2023 period life table). One in four 65-year-old men lives past 89, and one in four women past 92.

A life table lists, for every age, the chance of dying within the next year. Multiply the chances of surviving each year from your age onward and you get the probability of reaching any later age; the average of those outcomes is your life expectancy. This calculator uses the Social Security Administration's actuarial table, the one SSA and the Trustees use to project benefits.
It is a period table: it applies the death rates of 2023 for the rest of your life, with no future improvement, and it averages the whole Social Security area population. Your own health and habits can move your odds a long way in either direction. For a couple, the two lives are treated as independent, the standard planning assumption.

How to use this calculator
- Choose man or woman (the SSA table is published by sex) and enter your age.
- Optionally add a partner to see how long at least one of you is likely to live.
- Read your average life expectancy, the age you have a 50%, 25% and 10% chance of reaching, and your odds of reaching 70 through 100.
- Use the 1-in-4 or 1-in-10 age as a planning horizon for how long your retirement savings need to last.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What is the average life expectancy in the US?
75.8 years for men and 81.1 for women at birth, from the SSA's 2023 period life table for the Social Security area population (2026 Trustees Report). Life expectancy at older ages is higher than birth figures suggest, because it only counts people who have already survived to that age.
How long will I live if I'm 65?
On average, to about 83 for a man and 86 for a woman. Half of 65-year-old men live past 83 and half of women past 86; one in four men lives past 89 and one in four women past 92.
Enter your own age in the calculator for your figures.
What age should I plan my retirement savings to last until?
Planning to your average life expectancy means a 50/50 chance of outliving your money. Many planners use the age you have a 1-in-4 or 1-in-10 chance of reaching instead.
For a 65-year-old man those are 89 and 94; for a woman 92 and 96. For a couple, plan for the longer-lived of the two: the calculator shows the joint figure when you add a partner.
Why is my life expectancy higher than the number at birth?
Because you have already survived the years behind you. Life expectancy at birth includes everyone who dies young; by 65 those risks are behind you, so your expected age at death is later.
Your remaining years fall as you age, but your expected age at death keeps rising.
Is a period life table accurate for me?
It uses death rates observed in a single year (2023) and assumes they never change. Mortality has generally improved over time, so for younger people especially it tends to understate how long they will live.
It is also an average for the whole Social Security area population: health, smoking, income and family history all shift an individual's odds. Treat it as a planning baseline, not a prediction.
How does life expectancy affect when I claim Social Security?
Delaying Social Security raises your monthly benefit, but you collect it for fewer years. If you expect to live past your break-even age, waiting usually pays more over your lifetime; for a married couple the higher earner's benefit also becomes the survivor's benefit, so the longer-lived spouse matters.
The Social Security calculator shows the break-even age for your numbers.
