Read the full answer — method, rates and figures
Quick answer: Sales tax = price × rate. The rate you pay is the state rate plus any county, city and district rates.
On a $100.00 purchase in Texas at the 6.25% state rate, the tax is $6.25, for $106.25; local taxes can add up to 2% more there. 5 states — Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon — have no statewide sales tax (local taxes can still apply in Alaska). The highest statewide rate is California's 7.25% (including a 1.25% statewide local portion); Indiana, Mississippi, Rhode Island, Tennessee charge 7%.
To take tax out of a receipt total, divide by 1 + rate. State rates were checked on each state's revenue department site, 25 September 2026.
How do you calculate sales tax?
Price × rate: $100.00 × 6.25% (Texas state rate) = $6.25 tax, $106.25 total.

Tax = price × (state rate + local rate). Price before tax = total ÷ (1 + rate). State base rates were read on each state's own revenue department site on 25 September 2026; local rates vary by address, so enter yours (your state's rate lookup has it). Hawaii's general excise tax, New Mexico's gross receipts tax and Arizona's transaction privilege tax are charged to sellers but usually passed on, so they're shown as the rate you'll see.
Exemptions and reduced rates (groceries, medicine, clothing, sales tax holidays) are not applied — check your state.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the price.
- Pick your state for its base rate, and add your local rate.
- Choose whether the amount is before tax or already includes it.
- Read the tax and the total (or the pre-tax price).
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate sales tax?
Multiply the pre-tax price by the combined rate (state + county + city + special district) as a decimal: $50 × 8.25% = $50 × 0.0825 = $4.13. The total is price × (1 + rate).
How do I work out the price before tax?
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate: $108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100. The tax is the total minus that figure.
Don't take the rate off the total — that removes too much.
Which states have no sales tax?
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon have no statewide general sales tax. Alaska lets boroughs and cities levy their own, so you can still pay sales tax there.
Why is my rate different from the state rate?
Most states let counties, cities and special districts add their own sales taxes, so two stores in the same state can charge different totals. Your state revenue department publishes a rate lookup by address.
Some items — often groceries, prescription drugs and clothing — are exempt or taxed at a lower rate, depending on the state.
Can I deduct sales tax?
If you itemize, you can deduct either state and local income taxes or state and local general sales taxes (not both) as part of the SALT deduction on Schedule A. Sales tax usually wins in states with no income tax.
The IRS has a Sales Tax Deduction Calculator for the table amount.
