The Consumer Price Index measures the average change over time in the prices urban consumers pay for a basket of goods and services: food, housing, transport, healthcare and more. When the index doubles, the same basket costs twice as much, so a dollar buys half as much. Converting money between years is just the ratio of the two index values.
This calculator uses CPI-U, all items, US city average, not seasonally adjusted (1982–84 = 100), the index BLS uses for its own inflation calculator and the one most people mean by “inflation”. Years use the annual average; “August 2026” is the newest published month. BLS did not collect October 2025 prices during the government shutdown; the 2025 figure is BLS's own published annual average.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What is $100 from 2000 worth today?
$194.53 in August 2026 dollars. Put the other way, a dollar in August 2026 buys what $0.51 bought in 2000.
Change the years in the calculator for any other pair.
What is the current US inflation rate?
3.4% over the 12 months to August 2026, measured by the change in CPI-U (not seasonally adjusted) from the same month a year earlier. That is the headline rate BLS reports.
It is updated monthly, and this page follows each release.
How is the inflation-adjusted value calculated?
Amount × (CPI in the later period ÷ CPI in the earlier period). For a year, the calculator uses that year's annual-average CPI; for today, the latest published month.
This is the same method as the BLS CPI Inflation Calculator, though BLS works month to month, so its answers can differ slightly from annual averages.
Why is the annual inflation rate here different from the one in the news?
There are two common yearly measures. The news usually quotes the December-to-December change (or the latest 12-month change).
The table on this page shows the change in the annual average, the whole year's average price level against the previous year's. Both are correct; they measure slightly different things and can differ by a point or more in years when inflation speeds up or slows down.
Does CPI measure my own inflation?
Not exactly. CPI-U tracks the average prices of a basket of goods and services bought by urban households.
Your own rate depends on what you spend on: housing, healthcare and education have risen faster than the average over long periods, and electronics much slower. Social Security raises benefits using a different index, CPI-W.
How do I protect savings from inflation?
Money that earns less than inflation loses buying power, even if the balance grows. Over long periods diversified investments have beaten inflation, and Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) and I bonds are indexed to CPI-U directly.
