Quick answer: A FERS pension is 1% of your high-3 average salary for each year of service, or 1.1% if you retire at 62 or older with at least 20 years. With a $100,000 high-3: 25 years retiring at 62 pays $27,500 a year; 30 years retiring at your minimum retirement age (57 if born in 1970 or later) pays $30,000, plus a FERS supplement of about $1,500 a month until 62 if your full-career Social Security estimate at 62 is $2,000; 15 years at 57 under MRA+10 is cut 5% for each year under 62, to $11,250.
A full survivor benefit reduces the annuity by 10%. Rules from OPM, checked 25 September 2026.
How much will my FERS pension be?
1% of your high-3 per year of service (1.1% at 62+ with 20+ years). $100,000 high-3, 25 years, retiring at 62: $27,500 a year.

Per month
$2,500

Supplement / month

Route: MRA + 30. $100,000 × 30 years × 1% = $30,000 → $30,000 a year (30% of your high-3). Plus about $1,500 a month of FERS supplement for 5 years until 62.

The calculator checks which immediate-retirement route you meet (62 + 5, 60 + 20, MRA + 30, or MRA + 10), applies 1% or 1.1% of your high-3 per year of service, then the 5%-a-year age reduction for MRA + 10 (unless you have 20 years and start at 60) and the survivor reduction.
The supplement uses OPM's method (your 40-year Social Security estimate at 62 × FERS years ÷ 40), before the earnings test. Special-provision retirees (law enforcement, firefighters, air traffic controllers), cost-of-living adjustments, unused sick leave and military buy-back are not modelled. Rules from OPM's FERS computation and eligibility pages, checked 25 September 2026.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How is a FERS pension calculated?
Basic annuity = high-3 average salary × years of creditable service × 1% — or × 1.1% if you are 62 or older at separation with at least 20 years. High-3 is your highest average basic pay over any three consecutive years, usually the last three; overtime and bonuses do not count.
With a $100,000 high-3 and 25 years at 62 that is $27,500 a year, $2,292 a month, before any survivor reduction.
What is my FERS minimum retirement age (MRA)?
It depends on your birth year: 55 if born before 1948, rising 2 months a year to 56 for 1953-1964, then rising again to 57 for anyone born in 1970 or later (56 and 4 months for 1966, 56 and 8 months for 1968).
When can I retire under FERS?
With an immediate, unreduced annuity at 62 with 5 years of service, 60 with 20 years, or your MRA with 30 years. At your MRA with 10 to 29 years you can retire immediately, but the annuity is reduced by 5% for each year you are under 62 — unless you postpone it.
Leaving earlier with 5 or more years gives a deferred annuity later.
What is the FERS supplement?
A payment until age 62 for people who retire on an immediate annuity that is not reduced for age (MRA+30, 60+20, or certain involuntary retirements) — not MRA+10 or deferred retirements. OPM estimates your full-career Social Security benefit at 62 and pays the share matching your FERS years out of 40: $2,000 × 30/40 = $1,500 a month.
It is reduced $1 for every $2 you earn above the Social Security earnings limit.
How much does the survivor benefit cost?
If you are married, a full survivor annuity (50% of your unreduced annuity to your spouse) is automatic unless your spouse consents otherwise, and it reduces your annuity by 10%. A partial survivor benefit of 25% costs 5%.
