Quick answer: Long service leave depends on your state or territory. In New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania you earn 8.67 weeks after 10 years' continuous service with one employer; in Victoria and the ACT it builds at 1 week per 60 weeks and can be taken after 7 years (about 6.07 weeks); in South Australia and the Northern Territory it is 13 weeks after 10 years (1.3 weeks per completed year).
A New South Wales worker on $1,600 a week with 12 years' service has 10.40 weeks of leave, worth $16,640. Whether you are paid out when you leave early depends on both the state and the reason: resign after 8 years in Victoria and you are paid $11,093; resign after 8 years in New South Wales and you are paid $0, because New South Wales pays pro-rata before 10 years only for dismissal, illness, a pressing domestic reason or death.

How much long service leave do I have?
In most states, 8.67 weeks after 10 years (13 in SA and the NT), or about 6.07 weeks after 7 years in Victoria and the ACT. Twelve years with one New South Wales employer on $1,600 a week is 10.40 weeks, worth $16,640.

Leaving now for this reason, New South Wales law pays nothing yet: before the full entitlement, this reason does not qualify for a pro-rata payment.

Leave is accrued at your jurisdiction's rate for every year of continuous service — part years included, except in South Australia and the Northern Territory, which count completed years only. It is valued at your ordinary weekly pay.
The payout on leaving applies your jurisdiction's pro-rata rules: the minimum service before anything is paid, and which reasons for leaving qualify before the full entitlement is reached. After the full entitlement, the accrued leave is paid whatever the reason, except that in the Northern Territory a dismissal for serious misconduct limits it to completed 10- and 5-year blocks. For Queensland and Tasmania the official guidance does not say how service after the last completed block is treated on leaving; the calculator pays it pro-rata, so check with the regulator.
Rules checked on 2026-09-24 against each state's Long Service Leave Act (Queensland: Industrial Relations Act 2016) and its official guidance page; the ACT and Northern Territory figures come from the Acts themselves.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How is long service leave calculated in Australia?
By your years of continuous service with one employer, under your state or territory's law. NSW, QLD, WA and TAS: 8.67 weeks after 10 years, then 4.33 weeks for each further 5.
VIC and the ACT: 1/60 of your service (about 0.87 weeks a year), available from 7 years. SA and the NT: 1.3 weeks per completed year, 13 weeks at 10 years.
Leave is paid at your ordinary weekly pay.
Do I get long service leave paid out if I resign?
Only once you pass your state's threshold, and in some states only for particular reasons. From 7 years, Victoria pays out for any reason; Western Australia pays for any reason except dismissal for serious misconduct; South Australia pays unless you were dismissed for serious and wilful misconduct or left without giving proper notice.
New South Wales (from 5 years), Queensland, Tasmania, the Northern Territory (from 7) and the ACT (from 5) pay pro-rata before the full entitlement only for reasons such as dismissal, illness or a pressing domestic reason, retirement age or death. Once you reach the full entitlement, the accrued leave is paid whatever the reason you leave.
Does casual or part-time work count?
Yes. Long service leave depends on continuous service, not on being full time; casual and part-time employees accrue it too, although what counts as continuous service for a casual has its own rules in each state.
The pay rate is your ordinary pay, which for varying hours is usually averaged over a set period — check your state's method.
What if I'm covered by an award, agreement or portable scheme?
Some awards and enterprise agreements set their own long service leave terms, and industries such as construction, cleaning, security and community services in several states have portable schemes that follow you between employers. This calculator uses the general state law for private-sector employees; if one of those applies to you, it takes precedence.
Can I take long service leave in advance or at half pay?
It depends on the state and on agreement with your employer. Western Australia has allowed leave in separate periods of any length, and at half or double pay by agreement, since 20 June 2022.
Other states and territories have their own rules on minimum periods, taking leave early and cashing it out. Ask your employer or the state regulator before relying on it.
Is long service leave paid out taxed?
Yes, under the ATO's rules for unused leave payments on termination — it is not treated as an employment termination payment. How it is taxed depends on when the leave accrued and why you are leaving (for example, a genuine redundancy is treated more favourably).
