Quick answer: GST in Australia is 10%. To add GST, multiply the price by 1.1: $100.00 becomes $110.00.
To find the GST in a GST-inclusive price, divide it by 11: $1,000.00 includes $90.91 of GST, so the price before GST is $909.09. Don't take 10% off an inclusive price — that removes too much ($100.00 from $1,000.00).
Businesses must register for GST once their GST turnover reaches $75,000 ($150,000 for non-profits); taxi and ride-sourcing drivers must register whatever their turnover. Source: ATO, checked 25 September 2026.
How do you work out GST?
Add GST: × 1.1. GST in an inclusive price: ÷ 11 — $1,000.00 includes $90.91.
GST
$90.91
Excluding GST
$909.09
Including GST
$1,000.00
BAS: GST payable
$2,000.00
$1,000.00 including GST: GST $90.91, $909.09 before GST, $1,000.00 with GST. BAS: $3,000.00 GST on sales (1A) − $1,000.00 GST credits (1B) = $2,000.00 to pay.

Adding GST: amount × 1.1. Removing GST: the GST in an inclusive amount is amount ÷ 11, and the GST-exclusive price is amount × 10 ÷ 11. BAS estimate: GST on sales (1A) minus GST credits on purchases (1B), treating every amount entered as a taxable sale or creditable purchase — leave out GST-free and input-taxed items. GST rate and registration thresholds from the ATO's How GST works and Registering for GST pages, checked 25 September 2026.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate GST?
Adding GST: price × 1.1 (or price + 10%). Working out the GST in a price that already includes it: price ÷ 11.
Removing GST: price ÷ 1.1, or price × 10 ÷ 11. For example $110.00 includes $10.00 GST and is $100.00 before GST.
Why divide by 11 and not take off 10%?
Because the 10% is charged on the price before GST, not on the total. A $100 item costs $110 with GST, and $10 is one-eleventh of $110.
Taking 10% off $110 would give $99, which is wrong.
When do I have to register for GST?
When your GST turnover (gross business income, not profit) reaches $75,000 a year — counting either the current month plus the previous 11, or the current month plus the next 11 — you must register within 21 days. Non-profits register at $150,000.
Taxi, limousine and ride-sourcing drivers must register from the first dollar, and you must be registered to claim fuel tax credits. Below the threshold, registration is optional (and usually for at least 12 months).
What is GST-free?
Some sales have no GST, such as most basic food, some health and medical services, some education courses and childcare, and exports. Other sales are input-taxed (for example residential rent and most financial supplies): no GST is charged, but you can't claim GST credits on the costs of making them.
How much GST do I pay on my BAS?
Generally, the GST you collected on your sales (label 1A) minus the GST credits on your business purchases (label 1B). If credits are larger, you get a refund.
You can only claim credits with a valid tax invoice for purchases over $82.50 including GST.
