The Consumer Price Index measures the change over time in the prices households pay for a fixed basket of goods and services: food, housing, transport, health, insurance and more. When the index doubles, the same basket costs twice as much, so a dollar buys half as much. Converting money between years is just the ratio of the two index values.
This calculator uses the ABS All groups CPI, weighted average of the eight capital cities, the series the RBA targets and the one most people mean by “inflation”. The ABS publishes it quarterly. A year here is the average of its four quarters; “June quarter 2026” is the newest published quarter. Early index values are published to two decimal places, so conversions from the 1950s carry a rounding margin of a fraction of a per cent.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What is $100 from 2000 worth today in Australia?
$206.15 in June quarter 2026 dollars. Put the other way, a dollar today buys what $0.49 bought in 2000.
Change the years in the calculator for any other pair.
What is Australia's current inflation rate?
3.9% over the year to the June quarter 2026, measured by the change in the ABS All groups CPI from the same quarter a year earlier. That is the headline annual rate the ABS reports each quarter, and it is above the RBA's 2–3% target band.
This page follows each quarterly release.
How is the inflation-adjusted value calculated?
Amount × (CPI in the later period ÷ CPI in the earlier period). For a year, the calculator uses that year's average CPI (the mean of its four quarterly index numbers); for today, the latest published quarter.
The RBA's inflation calculator uses the same index-ratio method, so answers should be close, though it works quarter by quarter rather than from yearly averages.
Why is the yearly inflation figure here different from the one in the news?
The news quotes the change over the year to the latest quarter (for example June quarter to June quarter). The table on this page shows the change in each calendar year's AVERAGE price level against the previous year's.
Both are correct; they measure slightly different things and can differ by a point or more in years when inflation speeds up or slows down.
Does the CPI measure my own cost of living?
Not exactly. The CPI tracks the average prices of a basket of goods and services bought by households in the eight capital cities.
Your own rate depends on what you spend on: rents, insurance and electricity have at times risen much faster than the average, and electronics much slower. The ABS also publishes Selected Living Cost Indexes for employee, pensioner and self-funded retiree households, which include mortgage interest.
How do I protect my savings from inflation?
Money that earns less than inflation loses buying power, even if the balance grows. Over long periods, diversified investments (including super) have beaten inflation; cash has often not, after tax.
