Sources: median and mean by age from the ABS Survey of Income & Housing 2019-20, indexed to 2026 by ABS household net worth per capita (cat. 5232.0). The percentile bands (p25/p75/p90/p99) are Richify modelled estimates โ€” ABS publishes deciles nationally, not by age, and no top-1% at all. Indexed estimates, not a new ABS release. Overall Australian median: $911,700. Nominal AUD, incl. super & home equity. Last updated July 2026.

How your net worth percentile is calculated

Your net worth is everything you own minus everything you owe: home, investment property, super, ASX shares and ETFs, cash and offset, vehicles and business interests, less your mortgage, HECS-HELP, car and personal loans and credit cards. Your percentile is the share of Australian households your age that hold less than that.

This calculator places your figure between the estimated percentile breakpoints for your age band and interpolates. Because it compares you to your own age group, a younger saver isn't unfairly ranked against 60-year-olds who have had decades of super and home-equity compounding.

Total vs investable net worth

These figures include super and principal-residence equity, so the family home and super drive much of the distribution. If you want your investablepercentile (the liquid assets outside super and the home that you can actually draw on before 60), subtract your home equity and preserved super before entering a figure above, and expect a lower ranking. Many Australians are โ€œhouse-rich and super-rich but cash-light.โ€

Moving up the percentiles

For most Australians the fastest lever is super: the 12% Super Guarantee plus concessional salary sacrifice (up to the $32,500 cap for FY2026-27) compounds in a low-tax environment, and it's the second-largest asset after the home in almost every age band. The super calculator and Coast FIRE calculator show how contributions move you up, the average net worth by age page has the full by-age breakdown behind these percentiles, and top 10% net worth in Australia sets out the 90th-percentile threshold on its own.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my net worth percentile in Australia?+

Your net worth percentile is the share of Australian households your age with less wealth than you. To work it out: (1) add up every asset โ€” home, investment property, super balance, ASX shares and ETFs, cash and offset, vehicles and business interests; (2) subtract every liability โ€” mortgage, HECS-HELP, car and personal loans, credit cards; (3) compare the result to the benchmark distribution for your age band. This calculator does that interpolation for you: enter your age and net worth and it returns your percentile against ABS SIH 2019-20 median/mean by age, indexed to 2026, with Richify modelled percentile bands (including super and home equity).

What net worth puts you in the top 1% in Australia?+

It rises steeply with age. Using modelled 99th-percentile (top 1%) bands, indexed to 2026: 25โ€“34 โ‰ˆ $4.3M | 35โ€“44 โ‰ˆ $7.2M | 45โ€“54 โ‰ˆ $8.6M | 55โ€“64 โ‰ˆ $13.2M | 65โ€“74 โ‰ˆ $18.3M. There is no official top-1% net worth by age โ€” the ABS publishes no 99th percentile, by age or nationally โ€” so these are Richify modelled estimates extrapolated from each band's ABS mean and median, and should be read as indicative only. The gap between the top 10% and the top 1% widens sharply with age, reflecting how wealth concentrates at the very top.

What net worth is the top 10% in Australia by age?+

The modelled 90th-percentile (top 10%) bands, including super and home equity, indexed to 2026: 25โ€“34 โ‰ˆ $1.26M | 35โ€“44 โ‰ˆ $2.41M | 45โ€“54 โ‰ˆ $3.63M | 55โ€“64 โ‰ˆ $5.08M | 65โ€“74 โ‰ˆ $5.88M. These are estimates โ€” ABS publishes deciles nationally (the 2019-20 national P90 was about $2.26M) but not by age, so a by-age top-10% is modelled, not official. Crossing the top-10% line usually means substantial Sydney or Melbourne home equity, a sizeable investment property or share portfolio, or business ownership. The threshold climbs with age because super and property compound.

What percentile is a $1 million net worth in Australia?+

Age-dependent. A $1,000,000 household net worth sits near the 64th percentile for the 35โ€“44 band, around the 38th percentile for 45โ€“54, and roughly the 30th percentile for 55โ€“64 (Richify modelled estimates, incl. super and home equity). For Australians under 35 it is roughly top 20%. Because Australian net worth includes super โ€” often the second-largest asset after the home โ€” the median household only crosses $1M in the 45โ€“54 band. Enter $1,000,000 and your exact age above to see the precise figure for your band.

Does net worth percentile include super and my home?+

Yes. The ABS methodology these figures follow counts all assets โ€” principal home and investment property, super balance, shares and ETFs, cash, business interests, vehicles and contents โ€” minus all liabilities (mortgage, HECS-HELP, credit cards, personal loans). Super is typically the second-largest asset after the home, and at ages 55โ€“64 it often equals or exceeds home equity for median Australians. If you want your 'investable' percentile (liquid assets that fund retirement), subtract your home equity before entering a figure and expect a lower ranking โ€” many Australians are house-rich but wealth-light outside the family home and super.

How accurate is this net worth percentile calculator?+

It's a piecewise-linear interpolation between the 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th and 99th percentile figures for your age band, so the cited thresholds anchor it and the in-between values are close. The median and mean come from the ABS Survey of Income and Housing 2019-20 (the most recent valid ABS wealth release โ€” the 2021-22 cycle was cancelled and the 2023-24 was withheld) indexed to 2026; the percentile bands are Richify modelled estimates, because ABS publishes deciles nationally, not by age. They are indexed estimates, not a new ABS release, and Australia publishes household-wealth data far less often than the US or Canada. Figures are AUD and include super and home equity. Treat the output as a well-grounded benchmark, not a precise ranking of every household.
