Market Capitalisation: Understanding Size in Shares and Crypto

Market capitalisation is the total market value of a company or crypto asset, calculated by multiplying the current price by the total number of shares or tokens in circulation. It is the standard metric for comparing relative size.

For ASX shares: Market cap = Share price x Total shares outstanding. CBA with a share price of $130 and roughly 1.7 billion shares has a market cap of approximately $220 billion — making it Australia's largest company. Companies are categorised as large-cap (ASX 50), mid-cap (ASX 51-200), and small-cap (ASX 201+).

For crypto: Market cap = Token price x Circulating supply. A coin at $0.001 is not cheap if there are 1 trillion tokens — that is a $1 billion market cap. A coin at $80,000 may be small if only 10,000 tokens exist. Price alone means nothing without supply context — a lesson many Australian crypto beginners learn the hard way.

On the ASX, market cap-weighted index funds (like VAS tracking the ASX 300) automatically allocate more to larger companies. This means your investment naturally skews toward established companies like CBA, BHP, CSL, and Woolworths — the biggest, most liquid companies on the exchange.

In crypto, market cap distinguishes established projects (Bitcoin at over $1 trillion, Ethereum at hundreds of billions) from mid-caps with growth potential and micro-caps with extreme risk. As a general rule, the smaller the market cap, the higher the volatility and the greater the risk of total loss.

Understanding market cap helps you make informed comparisons. Saying BHP is expensive because its share price is $45 while Zip is cheap at $1.50 is meaningless — BHP's market cap is roughly 100 times larger. Market cap provides the real context for any investment comparison.
