Quick answer: UK employees and workers — including agency and zero-hours workers, but not the self-employed — are entitled to 5.6 weeks' paid holiday a year: 28 days on a 5-day week, 16.8 days on 3 days a week, and never more than 28 days of statutory leave. Employers can count bank holidays within it.
For regular-hours workers, 4 weeks must be paid at your 'normal' rate — including regular overtime and commission — and the other 1.6 weeks at least at basic pay. Irregular-hours and part-year workers (leave years starting from 1 April 2024) build up 12.07% of the hours they work in each pay period: 30 hours earns 4 hours of leave.
In your first year you accrue one-twelfth of your leave each month. Source: GOV.UK, checked 25 September 2026.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How much holiday am I entitled to?
5.6 weeks a year: your normal working days per week × 5.6, capped at 28 days. That's 28 days on 5 days a week, 22.4 on 4, 16.8 on 3.
Bank holidays can be counted within it; your contract can give more.
How is holiday pay calculated?
You get a week's pay for each week of leave. For regular hours and fixed pay it's your normal week's pay; for shifts, your average weekly hours at your average hourly rate over the previous 52 paid weeks; for irregular hours, your average weekly pay over the previous 52 paid weeks.
For regular-hours workers, the first 4 weeks must include regular overtime, commission and similar payments ('normal' rate); the remaining 1.6 weeks can be at basic pay.
What is the 12.07% holiday accrual?
For irregular-hours and part-year workers with leave years starting on or after 1 April 2024, holiday builds up at 12.07% of the hours worked in each pay period, rounded to the nearest hour. 5.6 weeks ÷ 46.4 working weeks = 12.07%. Employers may pay 'rolled-up' holiday pay — 12.07% of pay added to each payslip — for these workers only.
Do I build up holiday while off sick or on maternity leave?
Yes. Statutory holiday keeps accruing during sick leave and maternity, paternity or adoption leave.
If you couldn't take it because you were sick, you can carry over up to 20 of your 28 days (regular hours); untaken leave because of family leave can be carried over too.
Can I carry holiday over?
If you get 28 days, up to 8 can usually be carried into the next year, depending on your contract. Extra leave above the statutory minimum follows your contract.
When you leave a job, untaken statutory holiday must be paid.
