Quick answer: Statutory redundancy pay needs 2 years' service. You get half a week's pay for each full year worked under age 22, one week's pay for each full year aged 22 to 40, and one and a half weeks' pay for each full year aged 41 or over, counting back from the end of your job and up to 20 years.
A week's pay is capped at £751 if you were made redundant on or after 6 April 2026 (England, Scotland and Wales), so the most you can get is £22,530; in Northern Ireland the cap is £783. A 45-year-old with 15 years' service on £600 a week gets 17 weeks' pay: £10,200.

Full years of service are counted back from your leaving date, up to 20. Each year is banded by the age you were throughout it: 41 or over = 1.5 weeks, 22-40 = 1 week, under 22 = half a week. Weekly pay is capped at £751 (£783 in Northern Ireland). Enhanced redundancy pay from your employer shares the £30,000 tax-free allowance with statutory pay. Rules from GOV.UK's Redundancy: your rights guide and nidirect, checked 25 September 2026.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How is statutory redundancy pay calculated?
Count your full years of continuous service back from your leaving date (up to 20). Each year when you were 41 or over for the whole year earns 1.5 weeks' pay, each year aged 22-40 earns 1 week, and each year under 22 earns half a week.
Multiply the weeks by your average weekly pay over the 12 weeks before your notice, capped at £751.
What is the maximum statutory redundancy pay in 2026?
£22,530 for redundancies on or after 6 April 2026 in England, Scotland and Wales: 30 weeks × £751. You need 20 years' service all aged 41 or over, so you'd be at least 61.
In Northern Ireland the cap is £783 a week and the maximum £23,490 (nidirect).
Is redundancy pay taxed?
Statutory redundancy pay and other non-contractual termination payments are tax-free up to £30,000 in total. Anything above that is taxed as income but has no employee National Insurance.
Your final wages, notice pay (including pay in lieu of notice) and holiday pay are taxed and have NI deducted as normal.
How much notice do I get?
At least 1 week if you've worked there between 1 month and 2 years, 1 week for each full year between 2 and 12 years, and 12 weeks after 12 years or more. Your contract can give more.
If your employer pays in lieu of notice, it's based on your normal pay and is taxable.
When don't I get redundancy pay?
If you have less than 2 years' service; if your employer offers to keep you on or offers suitable alternative work that you refuse without good reason; if you're dismissed for misconduct; and for some groups such as Crown servants, the armed forces and police. You must claim within 6 months of your job ending.
