Quick answer: Universal Credit is your maximum monthly amount — a standard allowance (£424.90 if you're single and 25 or over, £666.97 for a couple where either is 25 or over) plus £303.94 for each child, up to 85% of childcare costs, housing costs and any health or carer amounts — minus 55p for every £1 of take-home pay above your work allowance. Households with children or a health condition keep the first £427 a month of earnings (£710 if they get no help with housing).
A couple with two children, £900 rent, £600 childcare and £1,800 take-home pay gets about £1,929.70 a month; a single person over 25 with no rent support earning £500 gets £149.90. Source: GOV.UK, 2026-27 rates, checked 25 September 2026.

The maximum amount adds the standard allowance for your household, £303.94 per child (plus the pre-April-2017 first-child amount if it applies), disabled-child, health and carer amounts, 85% of childcare costs up to the cap (only if you are working) and your eligible housing costs. From it, 55% of take-home pay above any work allowance, the savings deduction and other benefits are taken off.
Rates from GOV.UK's Universal Credit guide for 2026-27, checked 25 September 2026. The benefit cap, Local Housing Allowance limits, the minimum income floor for the self-employed and deductions for advances or debts are not modelled — this is an estimate, not an entitlement decision.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How much Universal Credit will I get?
Add up your maximum amount — standard allowance, child amounts, childcare, housing and any health or carer amounts — then take off 55% of your take-home pay above your work allowance, a deduction for savings over £6,000 and some other benefits. In the example, the maximum is £2,684.85 and earnings reduce it by £755.15.
How much can I earn on Universal Credit?
There's no hours limit. For every £1 of take-home pay your Universal Credit falls by 55p.
If you have children or a health condition that limits your work, the first £427 a month (with housing costs) or £710 (without) is ignored. In the example, payments stop at about £5,309 a month of take-home pay.
What are the Universal Credit rates for 2026-27?
Monthly standard allowance: single under 25 £338.58; single 25+ £424.90; couple both under 25 £528.34; couple either 25+ £666.97. Each child £303.94.
Health amounts £217.26 or £429.80; carer's amount £209.34. Childcare up to 85% of costs, capped at £1,071.09 for one child and £1,836.16 for two or more.
Do savings affect Universal Credit?
Yes. Savings up to £6,000 don't count.
Between £6,000 and £16,000, your payment falls by £4.35 a month for every £250 (or part of £250). Above £16,000 you can't usually get Universal Credit.
Why is my payment different from this estimate?
Housing support is limited by the Local Housing Allowance for your area if you rent privately, the benefit cap can limit total benefits, advances and debts are deducted, and payments are worked out on each monthly assessment period — so a month with two paydays gives a lower payment. Use the official benefits calculators or your online account for the exact figure.
