How much Winter Fuel Payment you'll get this winter, and whether HMRC will take it back because your own income is over £35,000.

Quick answer: For winter 2026 to 2027 you can get a Winter Fuel Payment if you were born on or before 27 June 1960 and usually live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland during the qualifying week of 21 to 27 September 2026. Living alone, it is £200, or £300 if you were born before 28 September 1946.
If you live with someone else who is eligible and neither of you gets Pension Credit, Universal Credit or income-related ESA, the household amount is split, so each of two younger-band partners gets £100. If your own total income for the tax year is over £35,000, HMRC takes the whole payment back, usually through your tax code; your partner's income does not count, and there is no taper — £35,000 keeps it, £35,001 loses all of it.
Most people are paid automatically in November or December 2026. Sources: GOV.UK "Winter Fuel Payment" and HMRC "Winter Fuel Payments charge", checked 2026-09-27.
How much is the Winter Fuel Payment for 2026 to 2027?
£200, or £300 if you were born before 28 September 1946 — less when two eligible people share a home — and all of it goes back to HMRC if your own income is over £35,000.

Your total income of £28,500 is £6,500 under the £35,000 line, so you keep it. A taxable pension withdrawal or extra interest this tax year could push you over.

The payment follows GOV.UK's "How much you'll get" rules for winter 2026 to 2027, based on your circumstances in the qualifying week (21 to 27 September 2026). "Younger band" means born 28 September 1946 to 27 June 1960; "older band" means born before 28 September 1946.
The payback check adds up your own gross taxable income for the tax year (total income under section 23 of the Income Tax Act 2007 — before the personal allowance, not your partner's). Over £35,000, HMRC's charge equals the whole payment. The taxable part of pension withdrawals, interest and one-off income all count (a tax-free pension lump sum does not), so a one-off can push you over. Scotland's Pension Age Winter Heating Payment amounts are not modelled, though the same £35,000 charge applies to it.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Who can get the Winter Fuel Payment in 2026?
Anyone born on or before 27 June 1960 who usually lives in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, and was not in hospital or prison for the whole of the qualifying week (21 to 27 September 2026) or barred from public funds. In Scotland the Winter Fuel Payment has been replaced by the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment.
How much is the Winter Fuel Payment for 2026 to 2027?
£200 if you were born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960, £300 if you were born earlier. Couples who both qualify and get no means-tested benefits share it: £100 each if both are in the younger band, £150 each if both are older, or £100 and £200 if one of each.
In a care home it is £100 or £150.
Will I have to pay the Winter Fuel Payment back?
Only if your own total income for the tax year is over £35,000. Total income means, broadly, all your taxable income before the personal allowance: State Pension, private and workplace pensions, earnings, savings interest, dividends and rental profit.
Your partner's income is ignored. If you are over the line, HMRC recovers the full amount, usually by changing your tax code; if you file Self Assessment, it is added to your tax bill.
How does HMRC take the Winter Fuel Payment back?
Through your tax code, so slightly more tax comes out of your pension or wages each month. HMRC's own example for the 2026 to 2027 tax year is about £17 a month for a £200 payment, rising temporarily to about £33 a month in 2027 to 2028 while it recovers two winters at once.
You can opt out of the payment instead if you know your income is over the threshold.
Do I need to claim?
Most people are paid automatically, including anyone getting the State Pension or Pension Credit. You need to claim only if you get none of the qualifying benefits and have not had a payment before, or have deferred your State Pension.
The deadline for winter 2026 to 2027 is 31 March 2027.
When will it be paid?
Letters go out in October or November, and most payments arrive in November or December 2026, usually into the account your State Pension is paid into. If nothing has arrived by 27 January 2027, contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.
