The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit is the income-tested, tax-free quarterly payment that replaced the GST/HST credit in July 2026. The CRA sets it once a year from your previous year's return and pays it in July, October, January and April.
The formula
Start with $445 for you and $445 for a spouse or partner (or for the first child of a single parent), and add $234 for each child under 19. A single person without children instead gets $445 plus up to $234, phasing in at 2% of income above $11,564. Then subtract 5% of adjusted family net income above $46,432.
Primary sources: Canada Revenue Agency, Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit: Payment amounts and Payments chart: July 2026 to June 2027 (2025 base year) (canada.ca). The calculator reproduces all 135 amounts in that chart exactly. It shows the federal amount only; provincial and territorial programs paid with it are not included. The CRA decides your actual payment.

How much more is the CGEB than the old GST credit?
The CRA's own tables for the two benefit years show the change. For July 2025 – June 2026 (the GST/HST credit) the amounts were $349 per adult and $184 per child, a $533 single maximum. For July 2026 – June 2027 (the CGEB) they are $445 and $234: a single person's maximum rises $146 to $679, a couple's $192 to $890, and each child adds $50 more than before. A separate one-time top-up was paid on June 5, 2026; it is not part of the quarterly amounts shown here.
Worked example: a family of four
- Couple with two children under 19, 2025 adjusted family net income $55,000.
- Maximum: $445 + $445 + 2 × $234 = $1,358.
- Reduction: 5% × ($55,000 − $46,432) = $428.40.
- CGEB: $929.60 a year, $232.40 each quarter (the CRA chart shows the same figure).
The same family also receives the Canada child benefit every month; estimate it with the Canada Child Benefit calculator, and see when each payment lands on the 2026 GST credit and CRA benefit payment dates.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How much is the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit?
For July 2026 – June 2027, based on your 2025 tax return, the CRA's maximums are $679 a year for a single person, $890 for a couple, and $234 more for each child under 19. A single parent receives the same as a couple with the same number of children.
It is paid in four equal quarterly instalments, so a family of four at the maximum ($1,358 a year) receives $339.50 each quarter. The amount is reduced once adjusted family net income passes $46,432.
Is the CGEB the same as the GST credit?
Yes. The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit replaced the GST/HST credit from the July 2026 payment.
It keeps the same structure (income-tested, tax-free, paid quarterly, no application beyond filing your return) with higher amounts: the single maximum rose from $533 in July 2025 – June 2026 to $679, and the couple amount from $698 to $890. It is not a refund of GST or HST you paid; spending does not affect it.
What is the income limit for the CGEB?
There is no single cut-off. The benefit is reduced by 5% of adjusted family net income above $46,432, so where it reaches $0 depends on family size: about $60,012 for a single person, $64,232 for a couple, $73,592 with two children and $82,952 with four.
Why is the single amount lower at very low incomes?
A single person without children gets $445 plus an additional amount of up to $234 that phases in at 2% of income above $11,564. It is full at about $23,264, which is why the CRA chart shows $513.72 at $15,000 but $679 from roughly $23,300 up to $46,432.
When is the CGEB paid?
Quarterly: in 2026 on July 3 and October 5, then January and April 2027 for the same benefit year. If your quarterly amount would be under $50, the CRA pays the whole year in one July payment.
See all the dates on our GST credit payment dates page.
Do I need to apply for the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit?
No. The CRA works it out from your tax return, so the only requirement is to file every year, including years with no income, and for your spouse or common-law partner to file too. Your 2025 return sets the July 2026 – June 2027 amount.
The CGEB is not taxable and is not reported on your return. It can include provincial or territorial payments that this calculator does not show.
