Market Capitalisation: Understanding Company and Crypto Size in India
Market capitalisation is the total market value of a company or crypto asset, calculated by multiplying the current price by the total number of shares or tokens in circulation. It is the standard metric SEBI uses to classify Indian stocks into large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap categories.
For Indian stocks: Market cap = Share price x Total shares outstanding. SEBI defines large-cap as the top 100 companies by market cap on NSE (Reliance, TCS, HDFC Bank), mid-cap as ranks 101-250 (Indian Hotels, Dixon Technologies), and small-cap as 251+. Your mutual fund category (large-cap, mid-cap, small-cap, flexi-cap) is determined by SEBI's market cap classification.
For crypto: Market cap = Token price x Circulating supply. A coin priced at ₹0.05 is not 'cheap' if 100 billion tokens exist — that is a ₹500 crore market cap. A coin at ₹40 lakh per unit (Bitcoin) is not 'expensive' — its market cap reflects genuine global adoption. Indian investors frequently make the mistake of buying low-priced tokens thinking they are getting a 'deal.'
Market cap determines how mutual funds are classified by SEBI and AMFI. A large-cap fund must invest at least 80% in top-100 companies. A mid-cap fund must invest at least 65% in companies ranked 101-250. Understanding this helps you choose the right mutual fund category for your risk tolerance.
In the Indian market, Reliance Industries frequently trades as the largest company by market cap (₹18-20 lakh crore+), followed by TCS, HDFC Bank, and other giants. These companies dominate the Nifty 50 index. Market cap-weighted indices automatically allocate more to larger companies.
For crypto traded on Indian exchanges, market cap distinguishes established projects (Bitcoin at $1 trillion+, Ethereum at $300 billion+) from mid-caps with growth potential and micro-caps with extreme risk. Always check market cap before investing — not just the per-unit price in rupees.
