Quick answer: The maximum CPP disability benefit in 2026 is $1,741.20 a month: a flat rate of $610.46 plus 75% of the CPP retirement pension your contributions would pay at 65 (up to $1,130.74). The average new beneficiary received $1,234.68 a month as of October 2025.

To qualify you must be 18 to 65, have a disability that stops you working regularly at any job and is long-term, and have contributed in 4 of the last 6 years (or 3 of 6 with at least 25 years in total). It is taxable, starts 4 months after the disability is found severe and prolonged, and converts to a CPP retirement pension at 65.

In 2026 you can earn up to $7,400 without affecting it. It is separate from the Canada Disability Benefit and the disability tax credit.

How it works

The Canada Pension Plan disability benefit is a taxable monthly payment for contributors under 65 who cannot work regularly at any job because of a severe and prolonged disability. It is earned through CPP contributions, not income-tested.

The formula

Monthly benefit = flat rate + 75% × your CPP retirement pension at 65 (Canada Pension Plan, s. 56(1)). For 2026 the flat rate is $610.46. The retirement pension is the one your contributions would pay at 65, based on your record up to the date of disability, and 75% of the $1,507.65 maximum is $1,130.74, so the maximum benefit is $1,741.20. Our engine reproduces that published maximum to the cent.

When payments start

If you qualify, your benefit starts 4 months after the month your disability was found to be severe and prolonged, and you can receive up to 11 months of back payments from the date your application was received. Tax is not deducted unless you ask for it.

CPP disability vs the Canada Disability Benefit vs the disability tax credit

Three federal programs with "disability" in the name, three different tests. Approval for one does not carry over to another, and you can receive all three at once.

The programs interact in one important way: CPP disability is taxable income, so it counts in the Canada Disability Benefit's income test, and it is not "working income", so none of it is exempt. A full year of the maximum CPP disability, $20,894, is still below the ≈$23,483 single threshold, so on its own it leaves the CDB untouched — the benefit would be $204.20 a month. Other income on top starts the 20% reduction. Use the Canada Disability Benefit calculator for the full income test, including couples.

Working while on CPP disability: the 2026 earnings limits

Earnings before tax (2026)Effect on your benefit
Below $7,400No impact
$7,400 to $20,971.44May affect benefits — tell Service Canada
$20,971.45 or moreLikely no longer eligible

Earnings above $7,400 do not cut the benefit by a formula the way the CDB's income test does; they are evidence about whether you can work regularly. A three-month work trial lets payments continue while that is assessed, and if your benefit stops because you returned to work and the same disability recurs within two years, it can be reinstated automatically. Volunteering or school of more than 15 hours a week for 4 months or longer must also be reported.

CPP disability and long-term disability insurance

You can qualify for CPP disability while you also receive disability income from a private insurer or a provincial program. Service Canada warns that those other sources may change their payments if you are approved, so read your policy's terms and ask your insurer before you count on both. Payments arrive on the same dates as other CPP benefits — see the CPP payment dates for 2026.

A worked example: a $900 retirement estimate

  1. Flat rate (2026): $610.46.
  2. Earnings-related portion: 75% × $900.00 = $675.00.
  3. CPP disability: $610.46 + $675.00 = $1,285.46 a month, or $15,426 a year before tax.
  4. At 65 it converts to the retirement pension, $900.00 in this example — lower, as Service Canada warns.

To see what that retirement pension would be if you started it at 60, 65 or 70, use the CPP calculator; for the Old Age Security that starts alongside it, the OAS calculator; and if your income at 65 will be low, the GIS calculator.

How to use this calculator

  1. Find your CPP retirement pension estimate at 65 in My Service Canada Account (Statement of Contributions). The disability calculation uses only contributions made up to when you became disabled, so use an estimate based on your record to date rather than one that assumes you keep working.
  2. Enter it. The calculator adds the 2026 flat rate of $610.46 to 75% of that estimate, capped at the $1,741.20 maximum.
  3. Enter how many of the last 6 years you contributed and your total years of contributions, to check the contribution test (4 of 6, or 3 of 6 with 25+ years).
  4. Optionally, add your other net income to see how CPP disability counts against the Canada Disability Benefit if you also have an approved disability tax credit.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How much is CPP disability in 2026?

The maximum CPP disability benefit for someone starting in January 2026 is $1,741.20 a month. It has two parts: a flat rate of $610.46 that everyone approved receives, plus 75% of the CPP retirement pension your contributions would pay at 65, which adds up to $1,130.74 more.

The average new beneficiary received $1,234.68 a month as of October 2025. The amounts rise each January with the cost of living, and the maximum also creeps up month by month as the CPP enhancement phases in.

How is the CPP disability amount calculated?

Under section 56 of the Canada Pension Plan, the disability pension is a flat rate benefit plus 75% of the retirement pension your contribution record would pay at 65, worked out from contributions up to when you became disabled. So a retirement estimate of $900.00 a month gives $610.46 + 75% × $900.00 = $1,285.46 a month.

At the $1,507.65 maximum retirement pension, the 75% share is exactly $1,130.74, which is why the 2026 maximum is $1,741.20. Your Statement of Contributions in My Service Canada Account is the place to find your own record.

Who qualifies for CPP disability?

You must meet three tests. Age: 18 to 65.

Disability: a mental or physical disability that stops you from working at any job on a regular basis, and is long-term and not expected to improve, or likely to cause death. Contributions: in the 6 years before your disability stopped you from working, you contributed in 4 of them, or in 3 of them if you have contributed for 25 years or more in total.

If you fall short, credits from work in another country, the child-rearing provision, or contributions split after a divorce or separation may still get you there.

Is CPP disability the same as the Canada Disability Benefit or the disability tax credit?

No — they are three separate programs. CPP disability is an insurance benefit you earned through CPP contributions; the test is whether you can work regularly at any job, and it is taxable.

The Canada Disability Benefit is an income-tested, non-taxable monthly payment of up to $204.20 for July 2026 to June 2027, for people aged 18 to 64; it needs no contributions, but it does need an approved disability tax credit. The disability tax credit is a non-refundable tax credit that lowers income tax; its medical test is a marked restriction in an activity of daily living, lasting at least 12 months, certified on Form T2201.

Being approved for one does not approve you for the others, and many people qualify for all three.

Can I work while on CPP disability?

Yes, within limits. In 2026 you can earn up to $7,400 before tax without it affecting your benefit, but you must contact Service Canada once you pass that amount.

Between $7,400 and $20,971.44 your benefit may be affected, because the earnings may show a capacity to work; at $20,971.45 or more you are likely no longer eligible. If you return to work regularly, a three-month work trial lets benefits continue while Service Canada assesses whether you can keep working.

What happens to CPP disability at 65?

It automatically changes to a CPP retirement pension, which will be lower than your disability benefit. You can also apply for Old Age Security and the Guaranteed Income Supplement.

If you were already receiving a CPP retirement pension before 65 and then became disabled, you may qualify for the post-retirement disability benefit instead — a flat $610.46 a month in 2026, added to your retirement pension — and it stops at 65.
