Safe Withdrawal Rate for Canadians: TFSA, RRSP, and OAS Optimisation
The safe withdrawal rate (SWR) is the maximum percentage of your portfolio you can withdraw each year in retirement with high confidence that your money will last your entire lifetime. For Canadians, optimising withdrawal order across TFSAs, RRSPs/RRIFs, and government pensions is critical.
The most famous SWR is 4%, from the Trinity Study. While originally US-focused, Canadian research supports similar findings — a 4% withdrawal rate from a diversified global portfolio survives the vast majority of 30-year historical periods.
Your retirement duration is the most important factor. Someone retiring at 40 needing 50+ years may need a more conservative 3-3.5% rate. Someone retiring at 60 with CPP starting at 65 and OAS at 65-70 has a shorter pure-withdrawal period and can potentially withdraw more aggressively in the early years.
Withdrawal order matters enormously for Canadians. TFSA withdrawals are tax-free and do not count as income (no OAS clawback). RRSP/RRIF withdrawals are fully taxable income. A common strategy: draw from non-registered accounts and TFSAs first, delay RRSP/RRIF withdrawals to benefit from continued tax-deferred growth, and begin mandatory RRIF minimums at 72.
CPP and OAS effectively reduce your required SWR from portfolio assets. If government pensions cover $23,000/year of a $50,000/year budget, your portfolio only needs to produce $27,000/year — a much lower effective withdrawal rate on a $1,000,000 portfolio (2.7% vs 5%).
Dynamic strategies — reducing withdrawals by 10-20% during bear markets — dramatically improve portfolio longevity. Combined with the CPP/OAS floor, Canadian retirees have a structural safety net that makes the 4% rule more conservative than it needs to be for many.
