Asset Allocation in Canada: Stocks, Bonds, and Your TFSA

Asset allocation is the strategy of dividing your investment portfolio among different asset categories — primarily equities, bonds, and cash — in proportions that reflect your financial goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance. For Canadians, this also involves deciding which assets go in which account type.

Research consistently shows asset allocation has more impact on long-term returns than picking individual stocks or funds. Equities offer the highest long-term growth potential but with significant short-term volatility. Bonds are generally more stable but grow more slowly. Cash (including GICs and HISAs) is the safest but most vulnerable to inflation.

A common starting point is '100 minus your age' for equity allocation. A 30-year-old would hold 70% equities and 30% bonds. Many modern advisers use '110 or 120 minus your age' to maintain higher equity exposure, given longer life expectancies and low interest rates.

For Canadians, asset location matters as much as asset allocation. Foreign dividends (US stocks) are taxed more heavily in a TFSA than in an RRSP (which benefits from the Canada-US tax treaty). A tax-efficient approach: hold Canadian equities and bonds in your TFSA, US equities in your RRSP, and international equities in either.

All-in-one ETFs simplify everything. VEQT (100% equity), VGRO (80/20), VBAL (60/40), and VCNS (40/60) each provide a pre-built allocation in a single ticker with automatic rebalancing — ideal for Canadians who want simplicity inside their TFSA or RRSP.

Your allocation should evolve over time. Review annually and adjust gradually as retirement approaches, your income grows, or your goals change. The most common mistake is adjusting at exactly the wrong moment — selling equities after a crash, driven by emotion rather than strategy.
